The border for this project came to me overgrown and full of perennial weeds like Ground Elder and Bindweed. Large shrubs had taken over and completely swamped out the exisiting plants, meaning you could not look down the full length of the border. What was left was a tired, overgrown and incoherant space.

My approach was to strip the border back to bare soil, and remove most of the old shrubs, and as many weeds as possible. Once complete, the new mix of 400 perennials and over 1500 bulbs could be installed.

The bried was a long lasting, tall and vibrant border taking inspiration from old traditional borders, with a contemporary angle to it. I designed the border in seasonal layers. As each one fades, the next begins to flower. An early bulb layer, then spring bulbs, early Summer perennials, high Summer display and late Summer into Autumn.

The scheme is only in its first growing season, but has put on an amazing display from Spring. It makes the garden stand out and is the highlight of Summer garden parties.
