Gravel Garden

Where: Ripon, North Yorkshire

Size: 200m2

Status: Planted Summer 2026

This garden came about through a current client wanting a garden that could withstand the dry summers the UK has been recently experiencing. The garden is inspired by natural vegitation communities found in Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal. Mediterranean shrubs such as Phlomis, Cistus (Rock Roses), Salvia and Rosmary form the backbone and year round structure, whist seasonal perennials and herbs fill in the gaps and provide seasonal colour. This scheme was watered once after planting in August, and won’t need to be watered again - a testament to the effectiveness of chosing drought tolerant plants and planting directly into deep gravel. It will grow to form a relaxed planting scheme where the clients can entertain all summer. Randomly arranged paving provides plenty space for seating. An array of Mediterranean and Balkan naive bulbs have been planted autumn 2026. Wild Tulips, Crocus and Muscari will carpet the gravel from Feburary right into Summer.
